When is a reach rescue deemed appropriate?

A reach rescue is deemed appropriate when the victim is close to the edge of the pool or shore because this technique allows a lifeguard to extend a hand, pole, or some other object to the victim without entering the water. This method minimizes risk for both the rescuer and the victim and is often the safest initial response to rescue someone who is in trouble but within a reachable distance.

In situations where the victim is submerged underwater, far from the shore, or if the lifeguard needs to enter the water, different rescue techniques such as a throw, tow, or swim rescue would be more appropriate. These other techniques would require different skill sets and considerations for safety, making the reach rescue specifically suited for those circumstances where the victim is within arm's reach and still accessible without entering the water.
